The Dance
The Dance
(To set the perfect mood while reading this story, I recommend listening to "One of the Girls" by The Weekend & Jennie & Lily-Rose.)
Kaya found herself wandering through the bustling crowds of the annual cultural festival, accompanied by her friends. The festival was alive with vibrant energy—masked faces, laughter, and various activities. There were games, singing, and acting competitions, but none truly caught Kaya's attention. Her gaze lingered on the one event that stirred old memories—the dance competition.
"Come on, Kaya!" Meera, her friend, nudged her playfully. "You’ve won so many school dance competitions. You should totally enter!"
Kaya smiled, nostalgia hitting her. "It’s been a while," she admitted, her thoughts drifting to the past. Her memories weren’t just of winning though; they also held the face of her biggest rival, Rony. He had this effortless, fluid style that always made it seem like dancing came as naturally as breathing to him. She couldn’t help but laugh to herself, thinking of the childish anger she’d harbored toward him back then.
As Kaya and her friends were about to walk away, the host’s voice boomed through the speakers, “Guys! Guys! Tonight’s special! I see lots of couples around, but hey, single people like us need to have fun too!”
The crowd erupted in cheers, and Kaya couldn’t help but chuckle at the host’s enthusiasm.
“So, we’re doing a couple’s dance competition for singles! Find your match through dance!” the host continued, his voice full of excitement.
People started rushing to register, their energy infectious. Before Kaya could even process what was happening, Meera grabbed her by the arm and dragged her to the sign-up table.
"Meera, no!" Kaya protested, but it was too late.
“Come on, you need to live a little!” Meera said, grinning. “Your college life is more boring than Mrs. Thomson’s history class.”
The others burst into laughter, and Kaya rolled her eyes, pretending to be hurt. “You’re so mean!”
Despite her resistance, Kaya found herself signed up for the competition. She wasn’t expecting much, especially after seeing the first few disastrous performances. The participants stumbled through the songs, completely out of sync with each other. Kaya exchanged a glance with Meera, who looked just as frustrated.
“What did you expect? National-level dancers?” Kaya teased, laughing.
Meera sighed dramatically. “At least they should be able to dance!”
When it was finally Kaya’s turn, she felt a slight rush of nerves. Her partner for the dance stepped onto the stage—another masked participant, just like her. The DJ announced the next song: “One of the Girls” by The Weekend. Kaya smiled, relieved by the choice. The song was a perfect match for her style, and apparently, for her partner’s as well.
As the first notes played, the crowd fell silent. Kaya and her mystery partner moved toward each other, locking eyes through their masks. There was an instant connection, a mutual understanding that they were both here to win this.
The beat dropped, and they exploded into movement. Each step was perfectly synchronized, their bodies flowing effortlessly to the rhythm. The fluidity of their actions, the small, intimate gestures—the gentle touches, the way he spun her around, and the way she leaned into him—were mesmerizing. They danced close, the space between them vanishing as they moved together in perfect harmony.
Kaya felt every beat of the music pulse through her, but it wasn’t just the music that made this dance special. It was the chemistry. Her partner moved with a familiarity that surprised her. It was as if he knew exactly how she would move before she even did.
The crowd was stunned. No one expected this level of perfection from two random dancers paired up on the spot. Every dip, every spin, every pop of their bodies was flawless. The tension between them was electric as if they were two parts of the same whole.
When the final note hit, Kaya and her partner stood still, their breaths heavy from the intensity of the performance. The crowd erupted into wild applause, but Kaya was too caught up in the moment to notice. She turned to her partner, her curiosity piqued.
"That was… incredible," she said breathlessly. “What’s your name?”
Her partner pulled off his mask, and Kaya’s heart skipped a beat as familiar eyes met hers.
“Oh, you know me very well, Kaya,” Rony said with a smirk, giving her a playful wink before turning to leave the stage.
Kaya stood there, completely stunned. She had just danced with her biggest rival—the same boy who used to drive her crazy with his effortless dancing, the same boy she thought she couldn’t stand.
And the most irritating thing of all? She had loved every second of it.
